Welcome to Part Four in our series of resources showcasing the businesses, charities, clubs, and other organizations that cater to America’s 65 million dog lovers.
So far, we have looked at dog shelters and rescue centers in part one, then specialist services for dogs and owners and most recently, we provided ideas for days out with your dog.
Now in Part Four, Next, we look at businesses and organizations that focus on your pet’s health and wellbeing, ranging from specialist food providers to dogwear to pet hospitals and welfare campaigners. Protect the Pets is a worldwide movement to ensure veterinary medicine is held to the highest moral and ethical standards. It was founded by Dr John Robb, one of the most respected doctors of veterinary medicine in Connecticut. For 40 years, he has been an outspoken advocate for animal rights, and Protect the Pets is not afraid to stand up to big businesses to allow veterinarians to make decisions that are in the best interest of an animal’s health.

Jiminy’s makes nutritious and sustainable dog food and treats from insect protein. It takes advantage of the insect’s tiny environmental impact for game-changing sustainability savings in land and water use, along with a massive reduction in greenhouse gas. In sum, insects are a sustainable superfood using exponentially less land, water or feed than traditional protein sources. The insect’s small size and rapid reproduction rates can’t be beat for protein production and insect protein has all the essential amino acids necessary to a dog’s diet. A health food emporium for dogs? Why not? Teca Tu is a pet boutique located in Santa Fe, NM and is in its 30th year of business. They have been serving Santa Fe’s and the world’s dogs and cats, along with their humans, since 1995. Check out their gourmet pet food, wholesome fresh-baked treats, stunning pet apparal, incredible neckware, joyous toys, comfy beds and travel accessories. They also hold adoptions at the store, usually a few times a month.

dogIDs was founded in 2005 by Clint and Lori Howitz in the basement of their home with the sole purpose of improving the lives of our precious pooches with top quality products that help keep them “Known and Safely Home”. They have now upgraded and relocated to an office and their team is a bit bigger, their primary goal is still the same: doing what is best for our four legged best friends.

Dog is Human is run by a collection of dog-lovers, including veterinarians, animal nutritionists, and researchers, whose goal is to empower dogs to live their healthiest lives by raising the standard of pet health to human standards. They put the effectiveness of their products above all, and that starts with a rigorous formulation and development process led by leading veterinarians and real human doctors. They are all about translating the same caliber of care in human science to the pet space.

Healthy Canines, Inc. is a small, all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide financial assistance to pet parents in the State of Georgia, who find it difficult to pay for their dog’s veterinary care for an illness, injury, medication, and medical equipment. By easing the financial hardships incurred by their pets’ healthcare needs, they hope that pets will be able to remain in loving homes rather than be abandoned, neglected, or surrendered to shelters where they are at risk of euthanasia.

Bobbie Adams is the CEO and owner of Pawsthetics. Bobbie is the only provider of orthotics and prosthetics for animals, who is both a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) and a Licensed Prosthetist Orthotist (LPO) in the state of Oklahoma. Bobbie obtained her Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Technology from Purdue University in 2004 and her Master of Science in Prosthetics and Orthotics from the University of Hartford in 2018.

Harley’s Hope Foundation was created in the summer of 2010 following the loss of David and Cynthia Bullock’s dog, Harley, to cancer. The Bullocks, who took Harley through several months of chemotherapy in an effort to save her life, realized that many people don’t have the financial means to do everything they can for their companion animals. They decided to honor Harley’s memory by creating an organization to help pet parents in Colorado aged 50 and over deal with unexpected hardships.

SouthCare Animal Medical Center is located in the South Hill region of Spokane, Washington, and is a full-service animal hospital serving the needs of dogs, cats, and pocket pets. In addition to providing general and emergency care services, they are dedicated to offering multimodal pain management, including therapeutic laser. Other areas of special interest to their doctors include end-of-life/hospice care, palliative care, and consultations.
